Students and staff from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) met with interested residents of Chippewa County and the surrounding region last Saturday to discuss what could be done to benefit the area and MCAD students. While any exchange is in an early stage at this point, the prospect or few-hour learning sessions got underway, with the possibility of internships and community revitalization projects with the aid of MCAD students in the future.

Renew Newcastle is currently calling for expressions of interest to be part of our ongoing city revitalisation program. Commercial office spaces have become available for the Renew Newcastle initiative.

The spaces that are immediately available are modern office type environments – 2 medium and 4 small offices as part of a floor, with shared reception area, kitchen and toilets. Other spaces – larger office spaces at street level, and smaller offices as part of existing shared spaces – will also be available.

Imagining New Connections in Science and Engineering Education

Change is on the horizon for STEM education across the country. A recently released report from the National Research Council presents a new framework for K-12 science education that identifies the key scientific and engineering ideas and practices all students should learn by the end of high school. The framework calls for a shift in the way science is taught and is the potential foundation for new science standards that could be adopted by many states. Minnesota is a lead state in developing the new standards which will be released for public comment at the end of March.

Join us to not only learn more about the framework and standards but to engage in meaningful interactive dialogue and small group discussions that will explore how we are preparing our students for the grand challenges of today and the future.

Where: Science Museum of Minnesota, Discovery Hall
When: April 12
Time: 8:30 a.m. Registration. 9:00 - 1:00 p.m.
For more information and to register click here.

Agenda:

Keynote: Heidi Schweingruber, Ph.D., Deputy Director of the Board on Science Education at the National Research Council

Pecha Kucha: Short presentations featuring six stories of how science and engineering is being successfully integrated with other fields

Interactive Design Challenge: How might we prepare our students to solve today’s grand challenges? You decide.

Don’t wait until the event to get the conversation going. Join the virtual Education Innovation Gathering on InCommons to discuss and share information on the topic, access relevant videos, documents, links to related organizations and resources.
